Why mulch is so important!

by Jacqueline du Plessis

· Blog,Education

Civilized man has marched across the face of theearth and left a desert in his footprints. —Anonymous

Have you ever been in a semi-desert or desert?

Did you notice how hot it was in the day, and how cold it get's at night?

I have growing up in South Africa. The Karoo is one such place.

Think about why you think this might be, and then watch this video of a TED talk given by Allan Savoy.

If this video challenges what you feel you have heard elsewhere about climate change, then take a look here.

Regarding this Growing Hope project, as much as we are planting gardens, we are focused on soil regeneration. We are building the soil and a key part of this is covering the soil with mulch! It's a simple thing, but covering even sand and dust and graded soil protects the earth from the intensity of the sund and begins to impact the soil in profound ways. Diversity and live return.

Even in your own back yard, you can start growing food and make sure to cover the soil. Mulch, mulch, mulch.

You can learn more about Permaculture and how and why it developed as you feel guided.
