Mission 2022 is contributing to a greater Permaculture Project that is committed to growing a network of gardens in schools and communities in South Africa. Growing Hope: Mission 2022 is about starting the process with 52 schools. We will endeavor to ensure these food gardens are thriving! The more thriving gardens, the happier we will be. There are a few factors we have considered with this project to make it as sustainable as possible. First, many areas in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa have high rainfall year round, and is extremely fertile. Second, by focusing on soil regeneration and bringing diversity to the soil, the gardens will become progressively more sustainable with time. We do this by bringing mulch to protect the soil and garden, as well as by planting a diversity of seedlings and seeds to assist with pest management. Will some plants die before harvest? Guaranteed, but this is part of life and the natural workings of a good garden. Everything we are doing is focused on improving the soil and based in permaculture principles and biodiversity. Nature takes time. Gardens take time. The soil where we plant these gardens will improve over time and our goal for 2023 and beyond will be to develop them into thriving, producing food gardens as the second phases of this project. We see ourselves as custodians of these food garden projects and we will treat not only your sponsorship, but also the land and gardens themselves, with care and respect.
