Potential: Seeds to Flowers to Money (Entrepreneurship)

by Jacqueline du Plessis

April 4, 2022

In KZN (South Africa) this past week, it has been school holidays. For some of these kids, the only lunch they get is at school (and one of the reasons why Growing Hope cares so much about putting food gardens into schools), but anyway, so I was driving in a residential area and saw 4 young teenage boys walking pointing to their stomachs and mouths. I stopped to talk to them, and then invited them to meet me down the street at a local pizza shop, and treated them to their very first pizza (they said they had never had it before).

I also went across the street to an animal feed place to purchase a kilogram of sunflower seeds and while we waited for pizza and while they ate, I explained how they could turn these seeds into flowers into money (and entreperneurship).

EDIT

I spent about an hour with them. I'll probably never know what they did or do with the knowledge (there were some language barriers and I'm considering learning Zulu) or if they make good use of these seeds that I shared with them and told them how to plant, harvest and sell them. But I also told them "You can be your own boss" when they said they were looking for work and explained how they could in fact do just that! #entrepreneurshipp
